When President Ronald K. Machtley announced his plans to retire following the 2020 Bryant Commencement, he and Kati Machtley expressed their desire to leave a legacy of opportunity for future Bryant students.

Thanks to Bryant Trustee and Warren Alpert Foundation Board Member Daniel F. Schmitt ’73, this new fund was established with $25,000 in seed money. The Warren Alpert Foundation Directors Giving Program allowed Schmitt and fellow directors to direct $25,000 to the charity of their choice. Earmarking his funds for Bryant, Schmitt noted, “I wanted to commit my entire gift to something that would have some meaning.”

“I have seen Ron and Kati’s personal commitment of time, effort, and money. The time and effort they devote to Bryant has been a major differentiator for the University,” he added. “I know their love of the University, and that was reflected throughout their whole tenure — with their tremendous commitment to the student body, the campus, and to the overall quality of Bryant,” said Schmitt.

“I have seen Ron and Kati’s personal commitment of time, effort, and money. The time and effort they devote to Bryant has been a major differentiator for the University.”

Inspired by Schmitt’s gift, a group of trustees, led by Anne Szostak ’02H, has stepped up to raise funds to support the Ronald K. Machtley and Kati C. Machtley Endowed Scholarship Fund. Those efforts honor the Machtleys' unwavering commitment to academic excellence and strong personal character that has shaped an institution that celebrates the essential qualities of integrity and personal responsibility.

With boundless energy for all things Bryant, the Machtleys have always been highly visible and deeply engaged stewards of the University’s growth, and have personified the very qualities of leadership and community that are so fundamental to Bryant’s outstanding educational experience.

Qualities of leadership and community

From athletic competitions to alumni events, and everything in between, the Machtleys have been a ubiquitous and supportive presence — a cornerstone of the Bryant experience — directly and indirectly touching the lives of some 15,000 students who have marched under the archway over the last 24 years.

Under the leadership of President Machtley, Bryant has transformed from a regional business college to a nationally ranked, world-class university. His visionary blueprint for Bryant in the 21st century has been realized with the spectacular success of Expanding the World of Opportunity: The Campaign for Bryant’s Bold Future. Under Kati Machtley’s leadership, the prestigious annual Women’s Summit® has fostered a pay-it-forward mindset of mentoring that continues to provide paths for professional development and the empowerment of women at all stages of their professional careers.

Support from this endowed scholarship will be available each year, ensuring a steady and reliable source of annual revenue for a competitive aid package that will make Bryant the first choice for top-caliber students who might otherwise be unable to attend.
