Professor of Visual Studies Maura Coughlin, an award-winning scholar and educator, was recently elected Vice President of the Nineteenth-Century Studies Association (NCSA). Coughlin has been involved with NCSA, an interdisciplinary association for the study of nineteenth-century world cultures, since 2006.

“Ever since I attended my first conference, I have appreciated the collegial, creative, and interdisciplinary community of NCSA,” said Coughlin. “I am honored to now serve as Vice President.”

Founded in 1979, NCSA membership has grown to include scholars whose disciplinary focus ranges from art, architecture, and literature to religious, scientific, and legal writing, to social, political, and economic debate. Coughlin was co-chair of the Boston NCSA conference in 2015 and served on the article prize committee, the nominating committee, the web and news committee, and the executive board of NCSA.

Recognizing Coughlin’s passion for art, NCSA presented her with its 2017 President’s Award to acknowledge her extraordinary contributions to the organization and to scholarship in interdisciplinary nineteenth-century studies.

Coughlin is joined by NCSA President Susan E. Cook from Southern New Hampshire University’s English Department, NCSA Treasurer Catherine Anderson of Sacramento City College’s Art and Art History Department, and NCSA Secretary Katherine Grenier of The Citadel’s History Department.

In her new position, Coughlin will assist the President and other members of the executive board in decisions about NCSA’s peer-reviewed journal and yearly conference, Radicalism and Reform, to take place in Rochester, NY in 2020.
