11 athletes who exemplify Bryant’s success in the NCAA era

Jan 21, 2026, by Bob Curley

Fifty years ago, Bryant Athletics made the transition from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to the more prominent National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). Entering at the Division II level, the competitive shift coincided with another more tangible one: the institution’s move from Providence to its then-new campus in Smithfield, Rhode Island.

The half-century of NCAA competition — including at the Division I level beginning in 2008 — has featured some of the most accomplished athletes in the university’s history, including these 11 Bryant Athletics Hall of Famers:

Men's Basketball: Ernie DeWitt '81

The only basketball player in Rhode Island collegiate history to score 2,000 points and have 1,000 career rebounds, Ernie DeWitt '81 was New England Rookie of the Year and ECAC Division II Rookie of the Year during his first-year season and a three-time National Basketball Coaches Association All-American during his Bryant career.

Dewitt’s 2,266 career points remains the second-highest tally in school history. He also ranks first, second, and fourth in all-time single-season field goal percentage and sits atop the Bryant record book with 970 field goals made in his career. The Newport, Rhode Island, native’s career pinnacle came in his senior year, when he was named a first team All-America and ECAC Division II Player of the Year.

Men's Golf: Jimmy Hallet '82

A club hockey goalie as well as a member of the Bryant golf team, Jimmy Hallet ’82 had more than a “Happy Gilmore” moment in his career. Hallet leveraged a 1982 semifinal appearance in the U.S. Amateur Tournament, while still a Bryant student, into an appearance at the 1983 Masters, where he competed against golf legends like Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, and eventual tournament winner Seve Ballesteros. His 68 opening round score was the best ever by an amateur and helped Hallet win the Low Amateur award.

At Bryant, Hallet won five consecutive New England Intercollegiate individual championships and was a four-time Division II All-American.

After graduation, Hallet competed full-time on the PGA Tour from 1988 to 1993 before returning home to Cape Cod, where he taught golf at Bass River Golf Course and Bayberry Hills Golf Course and helped coach the girls’ golf team at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School.

Women's Basketball: Karyn Marshall '86

One of the best pure shooters in Bryant women’s basketball history, Karyn Marshall ’86 had a .546 career field goal percentage and was one of the nation's top scorers, rebounders, and shooters during her final three collegiate seasons. She remains the only Bryant player selected to the U.S. Women Basketball Coaches Association's All-American team.

Marshall is Bryant women's career scoring leader with 1,986 points in four years and led her team to the 1986 Northeast-10 Conference championship, which was Bryant's first women's basketball title. Other records set by Marshall include career and season scoring average; career, season, and game field goal percentage; and career and season rebounding totals and average.

“Karyn’s raw talent, tenacity, and can-do attitude made her a force from the start, and watching her grow into a championship-winning, All-American powerhouse was incredible,” recalls teammate Ann-Marie Harrington ’86, currently a Bryant trustee and chair of the Rhode Island Foundation. “So many of her signature plays are still vivid in my mind. What made it all even more special was her joyful, kind spirit and the way she lifted everyone around her. Playing alongside her was an absolute privilege.”

After graduating in 2008, Garry served as an assistant volleyball coach at Bryant for two years before earning her MBA at Northern Illinois University in 2015; she has pursued a career in sales for the past decade.
