SMITHFIELD, RI – Bryant University will host the 4th annual Analytics without Borders conference on Friday, March 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the George E. Bello Center for Information and Technology. The event is co-sponsored by Bryant University, Tufts University, and Bentley University.

Detailed Program Schedule Here

Keynote speakers and breakout presentations will include leading edge discoveries in Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as AI and machine learning, predictive analytics, and blockchain technologies. Tutorials in Python, R, SQL, and Tableau will be available. The event is open to the public, and is a forum aimed at helping to train the next generation of data scientists.

“Whether it’s undergraduates working on their first research project, graduate and Ph.D. students working on theses and dissertations, academics continuing their research agendas, or industry professionals sharing lessons learned and experiences as to why what we do is relevant in the real world, it’s an opportunity for all.”

“Whether it’s undergraduates working on their first research project, graduate and Ph.D. students working on theses and dissertations, academics continuing their research agendas, or industry professionals sharing lessons learned and experiences as to why what we do is relevant in the real world, it’s an opportunity for all,” says Information Systems and Analytics Assistant Professor Kevin Mentzer, Ph.D., who is lead organizer of this year's event alongside Data Science Executive in Residence John Young and Information Systems and Analytics Professor Alan Olinsky, Ph.D.

Keynote speakers

This year’s event features a powerful line-up of keynote speakers: Bill Wellman, M.S., Healthcare Executive/entrepreneur, and Harvard Adjunct Faculty member; and John Lin, Senior Vice President and Lead Analytic Sciences Practice at Epsilon Data Management.

Morning keynote Bill Wellman, who will speak at 9 a.m., has held a wide range of information technology, consulting, and business executive positions and specializes in blockchain and information technology management. His presentation titled The Fourth Industrial Revolution with Blockchain Technologies will explore these game-changing technologies, which have already begun to transform supply chains, the financial services industry, and money. He predicts the impact will be far greater than prior industrial revolution technologies, and that the next revolution will usher in the Token Economy with a profound impact on both business, society, and daily living.

John Lin, who will speak at 1 p.m., has more than 20 years of experience in marketing analytics spanning various industries such as healthcare, financial services, technology and telecommunications, travel, and retail. His keynote presentation titled Innovation in Analytics via Machine Learning & AI will explore why machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) have been hailed as the future of analytics. These advanced techniques are a necessity in today’s world where customers seek out interactions that are customized to how they live their everyday lives – how they consume media, how they make purchases, and what content they have an affinity with. Lin will share recent case studies where marketers tapped into the ML/AI evolution that is leading to successful business outcomes.

Answering the call for skilled data scientists

These next-generation technologies are creating a high demand for skilled data scientists. Bryant University launched a new Data Science program fall 2017 to prepare students to meet this marketplace need, gain a competitive advantage, and become highly skilled analysts no matter what the AI, data-driven future brings.

“Success in the data science field will require deep technical knowledge and skill in managing data, but also an understanding of how to lead in business,” says Suhong Li, Ph.D., Professor and Department Chair for Information Systems and Analytics. “Bryant’s program brings together the best of those two worlds.”

“While it’s important to teach the technical side of data analysis, it’s equally important that students learn to effectively synthesize, translate, and communicate results to ensure they are well understood and ultimately acted upon,” says John Young, Data Science Executive in Residence. “Bryant recognizes and emphasizes this.”
