Bryant’s Healthcare Summit returns with focus on transformative power of AI

SMITHFIELD, RI—Bryant University will hold its third Healthcare Summit on the Smithfield campus on Friday, May 2. Transforming Healthcare Through AI: Innovation, Ethics, and Impact will bring together industry leaders, healthcare professionals, and researchers to explore how artificial intelligence is sparking innovation in the delivery of health services.

“From its inception, Bryant’s Healthcare Summit has been dedicated to convening leaders and professionals from across the healthcare industry to foster meaningful dialogue and collaboration that sparks innovation,” says School of Health and Behavioral Sciences Director Kirsten Hokeness, Ph.D. “By exploring the real-world uses of AI in healthcare and how it is already making a difference in the lives of patients, this year’s event will help us navigate the challenges and opportunities AI offers to improve quality of care.”

“AI has the potential to usher in an era of transformational change across many industries, especially in healthcare,” says Joseph Trunzo, Ph.D., professor of Psychology and associate director of the School of Health and Behavioral Sciences. “We have a unique opportunity to ensure AI is deployed in a human-centered way, where the drive for innovation is focused on patient outcomes, ethical decision-making, and enhanced healthcare delivery and efficiency.”

Bryant University’s Healthcare Summit will launch with three morning keynote speakers: 

  • Geeta Nayyar, MD, MBA, a globally recognized chief medical officer, technologist and author of the Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestseller Dead Wrong: Diagnosing and Treating Healthcare’s Misinformation Illness.
  • Allen Chang, MD, a physician and clinical informaticist who is part of the inaugural class of the UMass Chan Medical School’s Clinical Informatics Fellowship. He has been a key leader driving AI governance and policy, vendor assessment, and implementation at UMass Memorial Health.
  • Daniel Colling, HP Inc.’s Global Head for Healthcare Industry Solutions & Practice and Industry-led Professional Services.

A question-and-answer session with the speakers will give audience members the chance to discuss the impact of AI on healthcare operations. The morning will conclude with several breakout sessions:

  • Simplifying Complex Challenges with Design with Gregor Mittersinker, CEO and founder of loft, llc.
  • Innovators & Entrepreneurs in MedTech & Healthcare with Aidan Petrie, founding partner of New England Medical Innovation Center and a partner in Magpie Medtech Venture Fund.
  • AI in Pharma and Biotech with Naveed Afzal, Ph.D., global head of data science at Takeda.
  • Navigating Unchartered Territory: Legal Risks and Questions for AI in Healthcare with Leslie Parker, Esq., healthcare law and commercial litigation specialist and shareholder in the Providence office of Adler, Pollock & Sheehan.

John Fernandez, President and CEO of Brown University Medicine will deliver the lunch keynote addressing the state of health care in Rhode Island. The afternoon will feature discussions centered around success and challenges in diagnostics and treatment, featuring:

  • “Bringing the Future of Healthcare to the Present”: Severance MacLaughlin, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Delorean Artificial Intelligence
  • “AI and the Future of Behavioral Health: How Innovation is Transforming Care”: Mike Arevalo, Psy.D., PMP, director of clinical strategy at Core Solutions, Inc.
  • “AI for Cancer Care: From Pathology Diagnosis to Personalized Treatment”: Kun-Hsing Yu, M.D, Ph.D., assistant professor in the department of biomedical informatics at Harvard Medical School and developer of the CHIEF platform.
  • “Accelerating Histopathological Research Discoveries with AI-Powered Digital Pathology”: Akash Parvatikar, Ph.D., AI scientist and product manager of PathologyMap Platform, HistoWiz.
