SMITHFIELD, RI – “Empathetic leadership is one of the biggest drivers for retaining employees,” said Diya Das, Ph.D., Associate Dean of the College of Business and Professor of Management, in “The Workplace Report,” a new Wall Street Journal newsletter. In this week’s issue, editor Alexandra Levit, focused on how to “Keep [the] Best People With Strategies Beyond Pay” and asked Das to share her expertise.
“As the Great Resignation continues to unfold, many HR professionals and recruiting managers have doubled down on higher base compensation as both a retention and hiring tool,” writes Levit. But, she adds, “If you want to hire and keep the best people, compensation isn’t the only game in town.”
Benefit upgrades are another way employers can support employees and keep them engaged in the organization, notes Das. “Instead of thinking you have to increase pay, provide longer-term retention benefits such as tuition reimbursement and extra training and development opportunities.”
