For a decade, Bryant has designated a special day in its academic calendar each year to recognize research, academic accomplishment, and innovation and creativity. The University’s tenth annual Research and Engagement Day will be held on Wednesday, April 20, and focuses on sustainability. The day-long symposium is aligned with Earth Day 2022, Invest in Our Planet, and brings faculty, students and staff together to showcase and share their research, creativity, and academic accomplishments within the Bryant community.
According to Interim/Associate Provost Wendy Samter, Ph.D., “The REDay tradition is a dynamic reflection of how the Bryant experience develops innovative leaders and real-world problem solvers. This year we are eager to return in person and showcase the collaborative scholarship that is a hallmark of Bryant University.”
World-renowned paleoceanographer/marine geologist Maureen Raymo, Ph.D., will deliver the opening keynote, “The Climate Crisis: Where We Are, What We Can Do,” at 9am in Janikies Auditorium. Raymo serves as G. Unger Vetlesen Professor of Earth and Climate Science and Director of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at the Columbia Climate School for which she is co-founding Dean. She is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Geophysical Union, The Geological Society of America, The Geological Society of London, and The Explorers Club. Her research has been profiled in the New York Times, U.S. News & World Report, Discover magazine, and PBS Newshour as well as numerous other podcasts and radio segments.
The opening keynote lecture is co-sponsored by Academic Affairs and International Affairs of Bryant University and is open to the general public.
REDay’s closing keynote begins at 3:15pm in the Bello Center Grand Hall and features four Bryant faculty members: Assistant Professor of History and Social Sciences Katayoun Alidadi, Ph.D.; Professor of Finance and Department Chair Asli Ascioglu, Ph.D.; Assistant Professor of Management Erim Ergene, Ph.D.; and Professor of English and Cultural Studies Alex Perullo, Ph.D. They will discuss their social impact research.
The full slate for this year’s event includes more than 50 sessions and engages over 500 students with faculty and staff through roundtable discussions and best practices sessions, as well as paper and poster presentations. Throughout the day, the presentations and discussions will highlight important topics from collective mind mapping to brain waste among U.S. immigrants, to economics of climate change, to emoji prediction and analysis from Covid-19 tweets, to name just a few. Presentations by faculty experts address a wide range of subjects including Integrating Sustainable Development Goals to our Teaching: Not as Hard as You Might Think!, Integrating In-Demand Employment Skills Development in Global Experiential Learning, A Retrospective On 52 Years Of Teaching: Bryant's Transformational History, Risk Perceptions Related to Vaccines and the COVID-19 Vaccine: Exploring the Utility of the PRISM Framework and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for Supply Chain Entry Level Workers: Comparing the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada.

The collaborative research projects showcased at REDay are among the University’s most powerful and transformative experiential learning opportunities. At Bryant, undergraduate students have the chance to work with faculty in scholarly research partnerships that most universities don’t make available until post-graduate study.
